Kampala University School of Nursing and Healthy sciences is an affiliate school of Kampala University. It’s licensed and accredited by the Uganda Nurses and midwives council and fully recognized by the Ministry of Education and Sports and National Council for Higher Education Board.

The School is located in Mutundwe zone, 4km from Kampala city center, off Masaka road. The nursing school has a total of 16 teaching staff and out of these 11 tutors and five clinical instructors. Every year, the nursing school churns out 350 nurses and midwives at both certificates and diploma level.

Uniqueness of the Nursing School

According to Alex Jjemba, a senior tutor at Kampala University School of nursing and Healthy science says the University is unique in the following ways.

Our products are superb and Unique in a special way because we look at technology and factors at play. We also focus on the global market that’s why we teach our learners German language such that when they chance any opportunity in German they don’t face a problem of language barrier.

We ensure our students are equipped with entrepreneurship skills to avoid producing job seekers. We equip our students with computer lessons are compulsory for all students pursuing different courses. In fact, most of the work is done electronically or digitally.

The nursing school is a school with in Kampala University which is the awarding institution. It has a clear path where by students get inspired right away on day one up on enrolling at the nursing school. Up on completing studies, the students leave with two certificates, one for the University and the other awarded by government through the Ministry of Education and Sports.

This gives students a huge opportunity to compete at the global level. We are chartered University and we got the charter on merit in 2016 from the president of the Republic of Uganda.

  • Diploma in nursing upgrading.
  • Diploma in Midwifery Upgrading.
  • Diploma midwifery direct entry. Eligible for admission

The student must have passed “O” Level and scored five passes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English and Mathematics.

The student must be above 18years but the good news is that there is a petition in court seeking clarification on why students below 18years should not enroll for a nursing or midwifery despite having passed all the essential subjects required to pursue the medical course.

Achievements So Far Attained

Mr. Alex Jjemba says for the last 18years, the nursing school boasts of the following achievements, at the beginning we had one academic program but currently we boast of six academic programs.

Initially we didn’t have a university bus but now we have one which eases movement of our students on study tours.

At the beginning we operated on a temporary license but now we have a permanent one.

We have extended our partnership with other health facilities from Lubaga hospital to now Mulago hospital, Kawempe Referral hospital, Mukono health facilities, and Kayunga General Referral hospital among others. We boast of an operating memorandum of Understanding (M.O.U) with Neubrandenburg University with the purpose of exchanging programs for staff and students. This opens job opportunities for students and staff on either side.

Academically, we are becoming stronger and our products are highly demanded and consumed on the job market.

Our founder as well as the University Vice Chancellor Prof. Badru Katerega is ranked among the academic icons in the country based on his vast experience in educational field.

Challenges Faced

  • We have never got any funding from government and we entirely depend on tuition fees collected from students.
  • We pay money to government health facilities where our medical students undertake internship training.
  • We pay money to government healthy facilities where our medical students undertake internship training.
  • We pay heavy taxes to government and therefore government should be considered on this and offer us a tax waiver because we compliment on its work to train the future generation.

Future Prospects

We went to be the leading private university in the country in the field of health science. To attain this, we are currently working on five curriculum programs that include Bachelors of Nursing direct entry, Bachelor of Midwifery, nursing and midwifery upgrading and post graduate in medical education. These programs will come into effect the next academic year which will begin in August 2023.

We intend to start allied medical courses like clinic medicine, pharmacy, medical records, orthopedics and medical lab come 2024 academic year.

In the next 10year, we intend to have a well-equipped University hospital and we have so far secured land just in the neighborhood of the University campus.

N.B Kampala University is a big institution with five campuses, and they include Masaka campus, Mutundwe Campus plus the main campus in Gaba zone.
