Mbarara News explores the top five towns in the western part of the country in terms of size, popularity, swag,accessibility and the best tourist places.
1. Mbarara
Mbarara town is one of the largest towns in Uganda located about 290 km south west of Kampala. It is the largest city in the western region and the capital of Ankole Sub region. It is also the major transit town for tourists to the western national parks of Bwindi and Kigezi Region while its close proximity to Lake Mburo National park assures visitors of shopping opportunities.
The town is also home to the remains of the Ankole kingdom palace and the Nkokonjeru royal tombs for the Ankole kings are about 2 km from the town center. There is also Igongo cultural center that shelters most of the cultural objects and literature for the Ankole kingdom as well as the newly launched 1520AD eclipse monument on the Biharwe hill in Mbarara municipality.
In 1991, the national census estimated the population of the district at about 267,500. The 2002 national census estimated the district population at about 361,500, with an estimated growth rate of about2.2%. Of these, 51% were female and 49% were male. 55% of the district population is aged between 0 and 18 years. In 2012, the district population was estimated at approximately 445,600.
2. Kasese
Affectionately known as the opposition City, Kasese is the epicentre of Western Uganda’s culture and tourism. It is also extraordinarily beautiful, being home to the Queen Elizabeth Park, Rwenzori Mountains, as well as the magnificent Kazinga Channel.
In fact, Kasese has been recognised as one of the world’s most beautiful towns. The beauty extends beyond its natural wealth. The town centre is brimming with old industries of copper,cement and salt which makes It a commercial hotspot.With the plan of building an airport,Kasese will be the best city in East Africa.
3. Kabale
Kabale is a historical city that is situated very close to Rwanda, and is the administrative capital of Kigezi sub region. It showcases the Bakiga culture and history with many tourism features like Bwindi Impenetrable forest, Lake Bunyonyi and the Kigezi hills giving visitors a special insight into what has shaped our country and people of mixed cultures of Bafumbira, Banyankole, Banyarwanda and Bakiga.
The town is known for its local brew made out of sorghum called Omulamba/Enturiire,here guys drink and showcase their dancing skills,Kabale is always cold which gives the tourists a European feeling while here in Uganda.
If you want good hotels and sexy babes in Kigezi region then Kabale is the answer.Here you will get a chance to go for gorilla tracking in the nearby Kisoro district.
4. Fort Portal
This is the most swaggerific town in western Uganda,known for the juicy and oily babes, Fort is the home to the mountains of the moon university,its the headquarters of Kabarole district and the home of Tooro Kingdom.
Batooro are the most friendly people in Uganda and King Oyo Nyimba kabamba Iguru Rukirabasaija’s palace is in Fort.
According to the 2002 national census, the population of Fort Portal was about 41,000. In 2010, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) estimated the population at 46,300. In 2011, UBOS estimated the population at 47,100.In August 2014, the national population census put the population at 54,275.

5. Kiruhura
Kiruhura is the first town in the Western Region of Uganda because it is the home to the president of the republic of Uganda. For the last 30 years,this town has been at the helm of Ugandan politics, from producing freedom fighters to housing the most beautiful and watery Banyankole babes in western Uganda.Kiruhura is a home to atleast 3 Military Generals making it the town with military swagg in western Uganda.
When you visit this town,you will not miss to see the legendary long horned cows,the heritage of Ankole,you will also not miss a variety of wild animals from lake Mburo and if you are lucky,you will bump into HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the first family at their country home in Rwakitura.
If you are wondering where Kiruhura is, its approximately 69 kilometres (43 mi), by road, northeast of Mbarara, the largest city in the Ankole sub-region.This is approximately 265 kilometres (165 mi), by road, south-west of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda.The coordinates of the town are 0°12’53.0″S, 30°46’12.0″E (Latitude:-0.214709; Longitude:30.769999) according to google maps!!!
